ICON kicks off 2024 with ERAs contest, exploring the themes of identity and transformation, alongside Michael Curri's solo exhibition. The gallery provided a platform for introspection and visual exploration, showcasing diverse artistic expressions in a dynamic setting.

The vibe at ICON was electric, pulsating with positivity and creativity the moment we stepped into the art reception.

While the gallery space may be compact, it compensates with an overflow of beauty. Art pieces were showcased on stands, integrated into the architecture, or gracefully suspended, each one beckoning art aficionados to find it a loving home.

As we entered, champagne flowed, and delectable hors d'oeuvres awaited. The atmosphere, introduced to us by Avian Noble and Teri Harrison, was quickly embraced by everyone who entered. The room buzzed with the excitement of people pouring in, their smiling faces eager to connect for this special event, sparking a lively symphony of conversations.

A mysterious section was veiled off, adding an intriguing touch to the event, and behind the curtain awaited an alternate universe illuminated by the captivating works of Michael Curri. Around 30 pieces were strategically displayed, with black lights magically bringing them to life as you turned the corner.

Provided with black light flashlights, attendees could interact with Curri's art, observing the pieces with and without the added detail. This immersive experience allowed for an up-close and personal encounter with the intricate brush strokes, choice of materials, vibrant colors, and the ethereal touch of black light reflective details.

Amidst the growing chatter, we were fortunate enough to chat briefly with the artist Michael Curri himself. His positive energy radiated as he guided us through his various pieces, sharing the fascinating backstories. From his prodigious beginnings to his inspiration drawn from Native American tribe rituals and the mysteries of Skinwalker Ranch, his UV reactive piece named Blue Star Part Begins captured the essence of Hopi mythology, symbolizing the beginning of a new world.

Another piece, Element 115, delved into the rumors surrounding Moscovium and its alleged use by alien spacecraft. Inspired by a mundane yet amusing incident involving a side-view mirror and a trash can, Curri infused creativity into the smallest moments of life.

The room was filled with other captivating works, including Bug Off My Dreams, Solar Wind, Pennies From Heaven, Eon's Season, and many more.

As the room continued to fill with enthusiasts eager to hear from Michael, we took the opportunity to explore the rest of the space. In addition to showcasing Curri's work, ICON was gearing up to announce the winners of the ERA event contest that had kicked off earlier in the month.

January's theme, centered around the concept of ERA – "Who are you?, Who are you becoming? Who have you been?" drew anticipation from the crowd. The curator gathered at least 50 people to reveal the winners: Most ICONic was awarded to Michael Bowles, followed with Kali Sierra claiming first place, Lindsay Pharro securing second, and Colby Fox taking home third.

Attending ICON for the first time was a revelation. The turnout demonstrated why Scene Pensacola is passionate about spotlighting underground artists in the area. The wealth of talent in our backyard deserves exposure, and by doing so, we hope to ignite new passions and support for the local art scene.
